Being “Right” vs “Happy”
by Kuro on Jan.26, 2009, under General
You can be right or you can be happy? This is a question that I never asked myself when my wife and I were dating. Now, I find myself asking that question more often than not, and to be honest – being happy is far more important than being right. The immediate thought for some is that I am continually surrendering my needs and desires to appease her needs and wants, but that isn’t the case. Being happy usually means finding a compromise that inevitably makes the resolution far more palatable for both of us, and most importantly – gives us both a feeling of being understood and vested in the positive outcome of the situation. Of course there are times when a unilateral or immediate decision may be required, but learning to share the responsibility of decision making can be of benefit for everyone. I will be the first to admit that learning that skill was difficult for me, as I was used to doing what was best for me. However, there comes a time when taking care of one’s family becomes paramount, and being right – just doesn’t seem to mean as much as being happy.
