Below is one of my favorites poems concerning Black men.
If I Should Die Tomorrow
(a black man to his son)
by Abil Zlyad Shabir
Listen son, while we have this time
together lets not spend it just talking about the weather.
There are black men who are dying every single day
from every cause and in every kind of way.
Many have died in wars in which nobody has won
many have died in the streets from some policeman’s gun.
But the saddest thing of all that is so hard to understand
most of them are killed by some other young black man.
So while I have you close, while I have you near
there are things I must say, things you must hear.
Cause far too often people fail to communicate
what they wished to say many times come much too late.
Our Father’s: What is your story?
by Kuro on Jun.20, 2011, under General
Some people seem to feel that the President was wrong in stating that we need our “fathers to be at home”. Well, Mr. President, I agree and I think it’s time that we take a look at our community in the mirror and really have some deep reflection as to what we see. I think we are all aware of the problems poverty, family structures, education, etc. Some of these issues have systematic components that play a role, but there is also the decisions that we make and the way that we treat each other. However, as men we need to do a better job – we need to reclaim our place in the family structure. I mean, when I read status updates like these on facebook “Happy Father’s Day to those deserving of such…”, “Fathers, it’s not what you say, but what you do”, etc. It really makes me pause and think about what’s happening in our community. We’ve all heard the speeches declaring where we should be at this point in time. Perhaps, we’ve even taken individual steps to working towards that end, but it saddens me that we can’t seem to move quicker.

Silent Whispers: Taking Time..
by Kuro on Mar.23, 2011, under Poets Corner

I’m Taking time..
Maybe there is no we, me or you..
Perhaps it ended when you couldnt’ see me?
Or appreciate what I brought to you.
I’m Taking time..
Because we aren’t clicking like we used too,
and I wasn’t trying like you used too,
and you weren’t seeing me like i’m used too.
I’m Taking time..
if i don’t do it now?
I’m not sure we’ll survive the next iteration,
because history repeats itself,
and i’m one repeition from losing all sensation.
I’m Taking time
Because if I don’t?
history is what we’ll be.
